My journey into tutoring

I recently finished Year 13 with strong results through NCEA levels 1, 2, and 3, and throughout school I found that I genuinely enjoyed helping classmates work through problems they were stuck on. Through programs at my school as I was able to begin tutoring sessions which has led me to private tutoring outside of school.

What makes me effective is that I actually remember what it feels like to sit NCEA exams - the pressure, the confusing parts, and the specific ways the questions are worded. I don't just explain concepts from a textbook, I help students understand the material the way it actually comes up in tests. I've worked with students one on one previously and found that with the right explanation and a bit of patience, most students who think they're bad at Maths or Science just haven't had it explained in a way that clicks for them yet. That's what I'm here for.

Who am I?

Hi, I'm Dillon - a Hamilton-based tutor in my first year student at the University of Waikato.

I recently finished Year 13 with strong results in NCEA levels 1,2, and 3, and throughout school I found that helping others understand difficult concepts came naturally to me. 

Outside of academics I'm passionate about rowing - I competed throughout high school and still row at club level now. Rowing has taught me a lot about discipline, consistency and the value of having someone in your corner who believes in you before you believe in yourself. I try to bring that same mentality to every tutoring session.

I know what it's like to balance a full schedule, work hard at something, and push through when it gets difficult. That's the kind of work ethic I hope to bring out in the students I work with.

I also aim to not just be a tutor, but also to build a connection with students enabling better overall learning. With this real connection students can be more confident and will be more engaged. It will also allow me to understand who I am working with and help them with their specific needs weekly, leading to a better result in the long term.
